Suspected drunk driver remains jailed

Joseph Welch held on $100,000 bond

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - The man accused of causing the fatal crash on U.S. 52 and Morehouse Road remains in the Tippecanoe County jail on 100-thousand dollars bond. 

The prosecutor filed documents to hold 29-year old Joseph Welch until formal charges can be filed in the case. 

The affidavit said the Texas man first denied drinking.  But, a portable breathalyzer test showed he had a blood alcohol level of .29% Results of later blood tests put his blood alcohol content at .21% That is nearly three times the legal limit. Welch has a previous conviction for Operating While Intoxicated in Iowa. 

The Fatal Alcohol Crash Team is still investigating the crash.  Members are taking measurements on US 52 and Morehouse Road trying to determine how the two vehicles collided. 

The Prosecutor's office has until December 2 to file formal charges against Welch.
