LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) -
Some fireworks stores open for one day so revelers can bring in the new year with a bang.

"It's New Year's Eve and we're ready to blow some stuff up," said Michael Baldwin, the owner of Mike's Fireworks.

Mike's Fireworks on State Route 26 unlocked the doors so those welcoming 2009 can bring in the new year with some sizzle, color, and noise.

"They are looking for the bigger stuff because they are buying 1-2 items and they just want to blow the big ones up," said Baldwin.

Top sellers are the 500 gram cakes, mini missiles, and mortars.
While most shoppers hope to create a big bang at midnight, others will pop into 2009 with something a little more low-key and less noisy.

"Champagne poppers," said Adam Murphy of Lafayette.  "We don't try to go all out, we just do something a little special."

Murphy and his family will keep the party this year at home where it's comfortable for both the children and adults.

"We're just getting together as a family.  Going to have some food, some board games, and do the count down at home and just celebrate with the family," he said.
