LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The Lafayette City Council decided to get more information before voting on one ordinance. The council considered a law on prohibiting the use of compression release engine brakes commonly known as Jake brakes on city streets. The law would ban the use of the brakes that make a loud popping noise within city limits from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. A vote on the first reading was scheduled, but councilman Rick Cornstuble says the council got an email from the brake manufacturer, who wants to provide more information about the product.
"He's apparently offered some addition information on how the brakes work and what other cities have done about the noise, so the council wanted to get that information and look it over before actually voting on the resolution," he explained.
Council put the brakes on the ordinance and tabled it until the January 5th meeting. Cornstuble said he will also look into how many signs will need to be posted on city streets to inform truck drivers of the ordinance and what those signs will cost taxpayers.
