Zero show for annexation public hearing

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Of more than 1,500 Tippecanoe County residents who could soon become Lafayette residents, zero showed up to complain or cheer at a public meeting Thursday night.

As NewsChannel 18 has been reporting for months, the city is looking to annex three pieces of land on the east side. Thursday was the public hearing before the City Council.

Mayor Tony Roswarski said only the members of the media and city employees were in the audience. He attributes much of that to mailings and public informational meetings which have been held in recent months.

"We have tried to be very open with people," he said. "We've tried not to hide this, not all of a sudden spring it on people and I think that shows tonight by the turnout."

The City Council will have a final vote on the annexation in October, which would make the move official in January.
