ATTICA, Ind. (WLFI) - A 67-year-old woman died as a result of injuries from a fire at her home in Attica.

The fire broke out around 8 p.m. in the 1300 block of North Perry Street. Though the cause of the fire is unknown, firefighters said they will handle the investigation as if it were arson.

Attica Fire Chief Ed O'Farrell said the department along with the West Point Volunteer Fire Department responded the to fire. When firefighters arrived, flames were showing from the doors and windows.

Firefighters said they were able to remove the woman trapped inside. She was later identified as Margaret Roarks. She was first taken to St. Vincent Williamsport Hospital.

"She was pretty bad when we got her out," Attica Fire Chief Ed O'Farrell said "They did CPR for a while. I don't know if they did CPR when they left the scene. I do know I heard them go ahead and call for the helicopter. Whether it actually landed and took her, I haven't heard back from the hospital yet."

O'Farrell later told NewsChannel 18, Roarks had died.

O'Farrell said police were called to the house about an hour before the fire occurred. NewsChannel 18 contacted the Attica Police Department. They would not release the reason they were at the residence an hour before the fire.
