LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Can you eat a pound of bacon in less than four minutes?
Some Lafayette residents tried to do just that as DT Kirby's restaurant held their first bacon-eating challenge.
"I love bacon. There's nothing not to like about bacon. If I was told I could only eat one meat cooked in a certain way, for the rest of my life, it would be bacon. It's delicious. It's salty goodness," said participant Jamie Merrick.
"I love the taste, the texture, everything. The temperature, the color, the smell. It's all good," said participant Trevor Landrum.
"It's a pride thing. You like to think that you are better than everyone else that you drink with. So, you come up with these ridiculous ideas and you make it happen. It should be fun. I look small in stature, but I can put it down. I've been eating bacon for the better part of 23 years. I've got some tricks, some aces up my sleeve. It should be interesting," said Participant Ryan Pitts.
"It was tough to chew and swallow, because it was sharp. The water helped, but it was completely different from the other challenges I've been in. I'm feeling all right. The other eating contests were very filling, but this wasn't as much food. I'm feeling all right. I want to have a beer," said contest winner Matthew Arnett.
Arnett received a $50 gift certificate to DT Kirby's, a trophy, and a possible stomach-ache.
Kirby's is planning more food contests for this summer.
