West Lafayette residents upset about rezoning request

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - About two dozen neighbors came out to the Area Plan Commission of Tippecanoe County meeting Wednesday to express their concerns with a rezoning request.

Four residents spelled out their worries to area planners.

The owner wants to rezone 17 acres of land on County Road 75 East, just south of County Road 500 North in West Lafayette.

The property is currently zoned R-1, which allows single-family homes on larger lots, approximately four per acre.  The request proposes a rezoning to R-1B, which allows single family homes on smaller lots, up to about seven per acre.

Plans on file call for 57 lots on the 17 acres, about 3.4 lots per acre.

"We want to make sure that our property values don't go down," said neighbor Jennifer Schetzsle.  "We want to make sure that if this property is rezoned to R-1B that it doesn't become the standard for that entire area and that's a big concern to us."

Area plan staff recommended approval on the request and the commission approved it unanimously.

It's scheduled to go before the West Lafayette City Council Nov. 5.
