White county school put on lockdown after gas leak

WHITE CO., Ind. (WLFI) - It happened just before 9 a.m. Thursday near East Lawn Elementary School on County Road 1300 East. The leak happened when a tank containing the gas disconnected from the tractor pulling it through a field.

Monticello Fire Chief Galen Logan said the nearby school was put on lock down and the ventilation system was turned off.

More than 20 people helped stop the leak from the Idaville, Burnettsville and Monticello Fire Departments.
Monticello Haz-Mat and the White County Sheriff's Office also provided aid in the clean-up.

Logan said anhydrous ammonia effects the respiratory system. He said his biggest concern was making sure children at the nearby school were safe.

"It could cause a lot of lung damage and things like that especially with small children a lot of them, you know, this time of year have colds, allergies, and asthma. It can aggravate those symptoms," Logan said.

East Lawn Elementary was taken off of lock down around 10:30 Thursday morning.

There were no injuries from the gas leak.
