What's that crater on campus?

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - If you're wandering through Harrison Street near Purdue's campus, you may notice a little bit of renovation.

This cavern-sized crater is on the corner of Harrison and Sheetz streets and is set to be a seven-story apartment complex with approximately 300 bedrooms and 300 parking stalls.

West Lafayette Director of Development Chandler Poole says the single-family homes and student housing that were there previously had run their course.

"This is a great urban renewal project for the University and for the city," Poole said.

"It allows us to densify an area for student housing and hopefully, as a ripple effect, alleviate some of the pressures we have in the New Chauncey area by providing higher-density, newer housing near the campus."

Opening for the new building is anticipated in time for the fall 2013 semester.
