WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Toyota Motor Corporation announced Monday that dealers should get parts to fix faulty accelerator pedals by the end of the week.
The company has started training dealers on how to make the repairs.
The glitch caused the automaker to stop production and recall millions of vehicles last week.
While Indiana State Police haven't yet received any reports of sticking accelerators, it's important to know what to do if this happens to you, Indiana State Police First Sergeant Brian Olehy said.
"The situation with the Toyota vehicles isn't a common occurence, but it's a potential occurence," he said. "And people should know what to do, how to react, in the event it should happen to them."
Olehy gave three important steps to remember: hit the brakes as hard as you can, shift the vehicle into neutral and shut off the engine.
Wait until the car stops to turn off the ignition and don't pump the brakes, he added.
"If you pump the brakes on one of these vehicles, you're only gonna reduce the amount of pressure you have, and the vehicle will not slow down," he said.
Olehy suggested going to an open parking lot to practice this plan of action, emphasizing the importance of being prepared.
"This is a panic-type situation," he said. "So you need to be ready to handle this."
