WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Thursday is "Flag Day", a day to honor the American flag, a symbol of patriotism.

According to the Library of Congress, the holiday was signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1949.

NewsChannel 18 hit the streets Thursday morning to see just how many people knew the true meaning of the holiday.

“I should know, but probably when my children were in elementary school I knew,” said Gail Deagan of West Lafayette.

"I don't even remember this from elementary school to be honest with you which is pretty sad. I'm not from around this area, may be the elementary schools around here do it better. But Flag Day? No,” said Steve Passaloukos of Demotte.

Here's another piece of a Flag Day trivia.

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the initial design of the flag.
