West Lafayette's new flag unveiled

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The city of West Lafayette now has its very own flag.

The Mayor's Youth Council has been working on it for the past year.

The final design includes three blue stripes -- representing the communities that came together to create West Lafayette.

The color red represents West Lafayette High School and blue to represent Harrison High School.

Blue also symbolizes the state flag, diversity, and the water of the oceans that touch all continents.

The flag also has a white wreath surrounding a gold star representing knowledge, education, and open-mindedness.

Mayor John Dennis said he has been working closely with the group of students to create a symbol for the city.

"We wanted to recognize diversity. We wanted to recognize our history in West Lafayette, and we wanted to recognize education, which is what we stand for, and we also wanted to recognize the state of Indiana. They did a great job getting all of those components put together in a flag that represents something that we can all believe in,” said Mayor Dennis.

The flag is up at city hall and Mayor Dennis says there will soon be more going up around the city.
