WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - West Lafayette firefighters showed their support for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by collecting donations.

For some firegfighters the Fill the Boot collection has become a yearly tradition.

"We've been doing this as long as I can remember. I've been with the department 28 years and we've been doing it for almost all that time. The fight against muscular dystrophy is important to all the public. It affects many, many families in Tippecanoe County, throughout the state, and through the United States," said firefighter Terry Jones.

Jones and other firefighters stood at the intersection of State Road 52 and Cumberland Avenue, boots in hand, collecting donations.

"Anything related to special needs or that kind of stuff, I try to give to those kinds of things because I see the amount of struggles they go through, but also the bravery they show during it," said Joe Andrews.

Andrews got out of his car to walk over and hand the firemen a donation.

Jones said even though the economy is tight, people have not been tight with their donations.

"I know the economy is bad, but when it comes to helping little kids fight this disease everybody digs deep and it comes from the heart," said Jones.

Firefighters said that often people will hand over small bills, but they said they will usually encounter a few $100 bills every collection.
