BENTON COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Indiana's suicide rate is higher than the national average. Benton County has the highest rate per capita in the state.

Sunday, Benton County hosted "Out of the Darkness," a walk to help prevent suicide.

The walk took place Sunday afternoon at Benton Central High School.

Spokesperson Lisa Brattain said they want suicide prevention to become a statewide effort.

"We would like suicide prevention and depression to become a natural part of our vocabulary, just like you can tell somebody that you have high blood pressure and nobody bats an eye," said Brattain.

All money raised at the walk Sunday will go toward raising suicide awareness and providing suicide training resources.
