LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Students, faculty and staff are still coping at Wainwright Middle School, one day after two students and one teacher were burned in a science lab accident.
The two students were hospitalized. The teacher suffered minor burns to the hands and was treated at the scene, according to Sheffield Township emergency responders.
Now students are back in class and the hallways are calm. The scene is much quieter than yesterday, when a medical helicopter, an ambulance, and emergency personnel disrupted class to aid those injured in the incident.
Wainwright Principal Neal McCutcheon said right now he's just trying to help get the school back to normal.
"We really want to get back to a routine, but also keep the kids and the teacher that were injured in the process in our hearts and minds. We're still in contact with them as well, but for the other students we need to keep going," said McCutcheon.
McCutcheon added the investigation into the accident is ongoing and more details about what happened won't be released until more information is known.
At the scene of the accident, parents did identify one of the students as 14-year-old Cody Garrett. On a web page sponsored by Clarian Health a poster identifying herself as Cody Garrett's sister said Cody is in critical condition. Other posters on this site suggested that the name of the other injured student was Leighton Fruits.
Riley Children's Hospital could not release information on Cody Garrett's condition.
