Wabash Riverfest still planned for this weekend

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The annual Riverfest will go on as planned this weekend. Saturday's event will not be canceled because of low water levels in the Wabash River, or the potential for rain.

Organizers said the canoe race will be shortened by about 100 yards because of low water levels. But they added, once the race is on, water levels won't be a factor.

The Riverfest is put on by the Wabash River Enhancement Corporation. Members of the corporation say the goal of the event is to educate adults and children on how to conserve the Wabash.

On Land Events Coordinator, Megan Benage, said there are plenty of fun activities where children can learn how to conserve the river.

"You'll learn about all the types of fish, you'll learn about the water cycle by making a bracelet and going through the incredible journey," Benage said. "And then you'll learn about water safety with the Red Cross, and then you'll have, in general, a good time, and not know you're learning."

Riverfest is Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Tapawingo Park. The event is free to everyone.
