WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Veterans and first responders honored each other Tuesday on the anniversary of Sept. 11 at the Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette.

Members of the Battle Ground Fire Department came out to talk to veterans and show them their truck. Some staff members even got to ride on the ladder.

The home invited Sgt. Major John Hampton to talk about building connections between different generations of veterans.

Staff members said the veterans were happy to spend time with local first responders.

"This day has special meaning to first responders, and firefighters, because so many lost their lives in New York at the Twin Towers," Indiana Veterans Home Interim Superintendent Melissa Durr said. "We're very honored they came out."

"We came out in remembrance," Battle Ground Fire Captain Ward Taylor said. "Not only did we lose brothers and sisters in New York, but also the people who fight to keep out country free."

Members of the public were also invited to the ceremony.
