LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The findings of a Postal Service survey are in.

Earlier this year the United States Postal Service wanted to know what people thought about a reduction in delivery from six days a week to five. Members of the postal service say the reduction of one delivery day would save post offices millions of dollars nationwide.

USPS Spokesperson Kim Yates said results of the survey turned up some positive information.

"What we are finding out from our customers is that 70 percent of our residential customers are accepting the idea of reducing our delivery frequency from 6 days to 5 days,” said Yates. “The business customers may be a little less happy about it, but residential customers are fine."

Yates added Postmaster General Jack Potter will use public opinion, along with financial information in front of Congress.

"Probably Postmaster General Potter is going to present general financial information as well. The drop in the mail volume will be one of those things,” said Yates. “Ultimately, the decision is going to rest with Congress whether they're going to remove that provision that allows us to make the change."

Yates says if the postal service had its way, the change in delivery would begin early in 2011.
