LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Tippecanoe Township Trustee Bill Jones dropped his bid for re-election after his candidacy was being challenged.

Paperwork filed in the county elections office by Roy Sparks states Jones "does not meet the party affiliation requirement to run in the primary."

Jones is one of the Republican township assessors who threw their support behind Democrat Samantha Steele's campaign for assessor four years ago.

About three hours after that challenge was filed, Jones withdrew his candidacy.

Roy Sparks could not be reached for comment on his reasons for filing the challenge.

Republican Mark Nesbitt, of Battle Ground, is now the lone candidate for Tippecanoe Township Trustee.
