Trolley tour offers way to beat the heat

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - People of all ages are able to enjoy a history lesson with air conditioning included.

Linda Erwin has been a tour guide for CityBus's Trolley Tours for the past two years.

"Did you know that there had been three courthouses? That two of them were in the same site and that we used to have pigs running around the courthouse and the first one was a log cabin," Erwin said.

Linda said she likes learning and sharing her knowledge about Lafayette and Purdue's past and present and said what better way to do it than in the air conditioning.

With triple-digit temperatures Saturday, one person visiting Lafayette said seeing the city and staying cool sounded like a pretty good idea.

"Well, we were looking for things to do to stay cool and it was free, so we thought we would just take a ride and be able to see the town, and see what was all around and tour around the university a little bit," visitor Mary Schwarz said.

The tour is full of interesting sights but Erwin said one of her personal favorites is a statue on Purdue's campus.

"Well, I think the horse statues is one of the coolest things. Learning how it was made and how it's so unique and it does look like it's made out of wood," Erwin said.

Erwin said there is something for everyone on the tour even if you were born and raised in Lafayette.

"So it can remind you of things you have forgotten, because things change, things are always changing. Maybe something has moved and over time you've forgotten how it used to be," Erwin said.

The hour-long tour provides an escape from the heat every Saturday morning from now through September. You can catch the free tour at the corner 5th & Main in downtown Lafayette Saturday mornings at 9:40 a.m. and 10:40 a.m..
