WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - People who live in West Lafayette talked trash.
The West Lafayette City Council held a public hearing about the proposed Pay As You Throw system, in which residents would be charged based on the amount of trash they toss each week.
West Lafayette resident Victoria Lord said she is in favor of the proposal, but there are still some kinks to be worked out.
An integrated recycling program will also be part of the new system. Anya Savikhin of Go Greener West Lafayette says that this will help people do more for the environment and the community.
The proposed plan would be a two tiered system. An $11 monthly fee will be charged for any can up 48 gallons. A premium trash service would charge $15 for a 96 gallon city toter. Stickers for extra bags up to 36 gallons would be $2 a piece. Bulk items would cost $10 to be removed.
City Councilor Ann Hunt is confident a final version will be ready by the February 18 deadline. The final vote on the Pay As You Throw program is set for March 1.
