Tippecanoe Solid Waste Management District considered a success

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Commissioners call the new Tippecanoe County Solid Waste Management District a big success.

Since the new site at 2770 N. 9th St. opened five months ago, it's brought in as much hazardous materials as the old site did in two years.

Commissioners say the site accepts hazardous household materials like car batteries and oil-based paints. The new site accepts trash, recycling and the hazardous materials in one trip.

County Commissioner Tom Murtaugh said it's not clear why the site has generated so much success, but he hopes it continues.

"The previous site was closed for a few weeks prior to the new one opening, so, maybe it's because of some of the stockpile people built up, or we're hoping the promotions we're running are generating some activity there as well," Murtaugh said. "The good news is people are dropping off the materials there exactly like we want them to do."

The new site is open six days a week. Murtaugh said that extra day could also help its success.
