Tippecanoe County part of voting scam

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - If you've received a call asking you to place your vote for this year's local election over the phone, you could be part of a scam.

According to the Tippecanoe County Elections Board, several voters in the county have received phone calls warning them that lines could be long at the polls this year.

In order to avoid those lines, callers are asking voters to place their vote over the phone. Tippecanoe County Board of Elections Co-Director Jared Bond said Indiana law does not allow that under any circumstances.

He said if you receive a phone call like this, you should call the Board of Elections immediately.

"I hope that people watching this story today see this, and if anybody else has received one of these calls, will contact us or will realize that this was not a real vote, that this was a scam," said Bond. "They still do need to come out if they want to participate in the process."

And as to why someone might be doing this?

"I think this is going to be a very close election," said Bond. "So, maybe these individuals who are calling are trying to sway the election by advising people that they've already voted, when they really haven't. They voted in some online scam or some over the phone scam, and that vote would not count."

Bond said the Board of Elections is currently in an investigation with the Indiana Secretary of State and Attorney General.
