Tippecanoe County Board of Elections pushes early voting

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Nineteen early voting sites in Tippecanoe County will allow voters to cast their ballot before the November 6 general election.

"It's an increase, it's actually doubled what we did during the primary," Tippecanoe County Board of Elections Co-Director Jared Bond said. "We had seven sites in the primary. The reason for that increase is because we're expecting a much larger turnout than the primary."

Bond expects 55,000 people to vote, and nearly half of them to vote before Nov. 6.

"In 2008, almost 70,000 people cast a ballot in the general election, and almost 37,000 of those cast a ballot prior to election day," Bond said. "So, it really cuts down on lines and maybe problems that might be had."

Voters' opinions differ when it comes to early voting.

"I enjoy the talking back and forth between all the people in line, and hearing all the different opinions," Voter Mary Remster said.

"I plan on not waiting in line," Voter Linda Kraatz said. "In the past I've gone early, and there were probably 10 of us waiting in line."

For the general election, some satellite voting locations will be moving out toward the edge of the county. There will be early voting sites in Stockwell, Romney, West Point and Otterbein.

"In the primary, we usually do [the satellite locations] more centered into town," Bond said. "In the general election, we try to get out a little further into the county. We just try to catch those folks who can't get into town, or work outside the town."

Some voters may decide differently on early voting, but most agree, casting your ballot, no matter when, is what matters the most.

"Get out there and vote," Remster said. "It's a freedom we have."

"I think everyone should vote," Kraatz said. "Then, they'll have less of a reason to complain."

Voter registration ends Oct. 9, the same day early voting begins.
