Thieves target holiday shoppers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - As many are spreading holiday cheer police said thieves are typically planing on what they'll be stealing.

However, Lieutenant Troy Harris with the West Lafayette Police Department said as of now they haven't seen a spike in thefts or car break-ins so far this holiday season.

But Lt. Harris said when you're out shopping or leaving your car in crowded parking lots be aware of your surroundings.

Harris said believe it or not, 70 percent of car break-ins that result in theft are simply because people leave their doors unlocked and leave valuable items to be seen.

He said he doesn't believe any of the recent car break-ins are related to holiday shopping but people need to still be aware of their surroundings and be extra cautious this holiday season.

"I think it's a crime of opportunity for when somebody is walking by a car and they see presents whether they be presents that were just purchased or wrapped, it gives them the opportunity to steal those items," Lt. Harris said.

To make sure you aren't a victim of these crimes Harris also reminds shoppers to keep your valuable items in your trunk.
