Students cast votes with cans instead of ballots

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Students at Harrison High School found a creative way to voice their opinions on the presidential election and help a good cause at the same time.

On the first day of the school's food drive for the Food Finders Food Bank, students cast their tin can ballots in one of two piles: one for Barack Obama, one for Mitt Romney.

One student says it's a fun way to help the community.

“The food drive is very important because it helps people in our community who need,” student Hannah Clauson said. “Families are very desperate for food in this time of year and it is great to see us be able to help them by bringing in just a can of food. It's really fun because it gets our entire student body involved and not just one class or one individual person.”

Organizers estimate students chose Obama with 600 cans to Romney's 500 cans.

The Harrison food drive continues through the end of the week.
