Students can now claim their own inventions

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Students at Purdue can now claim ownership of their inventions.

The intellectual property policy says any invention created with the use of Purdue resources is owned by the University. Thanks to a new interpretation approved by President Mitch Daniels, students now have ownership rights.
    
However, there are still some rules. The resources used must be part of a class and available to all students. Also, student inventors can't be paid by Purdue. The project also can't be funded by a corporation or government grant.
    
Keith Krach, Board of Trustees Chairman, said he hopes the rule change will help create new inventions and technologies.

"I think this is really going to, not only help out the students, but help out Purdue by removing the friction. I hope we see just a ton of patents coming out of this from our students," Krach explained.

Krach said he hopes those students will be successful someday and have Purdue to thank. He said that's how donations are made.
