Storms rip through area, leaving behind hail damage

CARROLL COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Severe storms ripped through the area Thursday night and with them came large, damaging hail.

"It got really calm and then, all of a sudden, we looked across the field and you could see it coming," said Radnor resident, Don Roberson.

Roberson didn't expect what was coming.

Leaves and debris covered the roads. House and car windows were shattered. Siding was ripped off homes. Trees were down in yards. This is the kind of damage left behind by Thursday night's storms.

Roberson said he knew he was in trouble once he heard the hail thrashing against his house.

"I had six windows busted out. I lost sky lights and pretty much all the siding on my house," said Roberson.

Across the street from Roberson's house, sits a boarded up church. The Pastor of Radnor United Methodist Church, Ed Selvidge, said seven windows were completely shattered.

"Some of the hail was within the church by about 15 or 20 feet inside the church, so I mean, it was forceful," said Selvidge.

Nine miles away, Flora was also feeling the hurt from the hail. Joshua Ayres assessed the damage throughout town. He said straight-line winds mixed with the large hail made for a scary combination.

"When it hit, there was just hail. Golf ball to practically baseball-sized hail coming down. It sounded like somebody was beating on the garage door," said Ayres.

Ayres owns a hardware store in Flora. He decided to open it after the storms rolled through. He said it was all an effort to help his community with the damage.

"Came up and turned the lights on. Pulled some plastic and some things for people, whatever they need," said Ayres.

A Delphi Police officer told NewsChannel 18 a Flora police car received major damage, shattering the windshield as an officer patrolled the streets.

Despite all the damage to homes, buildings, and roads, Carroll County dispatchers said there were no injuries.
