State Representative race comes down to 110 votes

FOUNTAIN COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - The state representative race for parts of Fountain and Warren counties has come down 110 votes.

"That's one of the lessons. Every vote counts," said District 42 Democratic Candidate Mark Spelbring.

Every vote counts for Spelbring. Indiana House District 42 is a sprawling district that is made up of Fountain, Warren, Clary, Park, Vermillion and Vigo Counties.

With all precincts reporting, Spelbring is unofficially down by 110 votes to Republican Alan Morrison. But Spelbring said there have been some tabulation issues.

"Part of our concern is the fact that the numbers seem to be changing and we've actually identified that two of the six counties reported their numbers to the state reversed," Spelbring said.

Spelbring said those two counties mixed up his totals with Morrison's. Now, he's waiting for the provisional ballots to come in. He said after those numbers are calculated, he will consider filing for a recount.

"We've been gathering information from the various counties on whether they're using paper ballots with a scanning type of system or using touch screens so that we have an idea of what the possibility is that there could be a different outcome if we did have a recount," said Spelbring.

But the idea of a recount doesn't concern Morrison. He said even when the provisional ballots are counted, he doesn't think the totals will change much.

"I'm pretty confident that I am the winner and I will serve House District 42 for the next two years and we'll see where it goes from there," Morrison said.

In fact, Morrison said he's already stepped up as a state representative. He spent Wednesday at the Statehouse voting for leadership positions including Speaker of the House.

"Kind of the little things that you want to get out of the way so you can get to the session and not have to worry about the odds and ins," Morrison said.

Both Spelbring and Morrison said they will anxiously await the provisional ballots. Spelbring has two weeks to file for a recount.
