St. Paddy's weekend arrests lower than normal

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - St. Paddy's Day is a big time for late night traffic, but West Lafayette Police said they have recorded fewer traffic related arrests than normal this holiday weekend.

Last week, law enforcement agencies throughout Tippecanoe County announced a three week traffic blitz, which would allow more officers to be on the road.

Officers said the goal is to look out for intoxicated and aggressive drivers.

West Lafayette Police Sergeant Jason Philhower said the low numbers this holiday weekend can be attributed to spring break.

"So far here in West Lafayette, the traffic here has been pretty light," said Philhower. "With Purdue being on spring break and West Lafayette schools being on spring break, it's been very light. We do expect traffic to pick up late today into Sunday night with everybody coming back to campus and back to the city."

Police said the blitz will continue until next Sunday.

Philhower said they also plan on setting up more sobriety check points during Grand Prix weekend in April.
