Snowy roads cause problems for drivers, crews out in full force

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The roads have been covered with snow for hours, making things hazardous for drivers. But crews have been working to keep the streets as clear as possible.

However, sometimes you can't beat Mother Nature.

"Most interstate traffic was stopped at 40-50 miles an hour," said Bradley Sliment, as he was traveling through Lafayette on I-65.

"Traffic's kind of moving a little slower, you know, cautious because of the road conditions," said Dan McCreery, a Lafayette resident.

Whether drivers were passing through Lafayette on I-65 or just trying to get home on the other side of town, most were slowing down and using caution. However, some drivers still fell victim to the snowy roads.

"We've responded to numerous accidents throughout the city, mainly on the main roads like 26, 52, Teal Road, Creasy Lane. All those roads have had accidents on them this evening," said Officer Dan Long with Lafayette Police.

Within an hour of the snow starting Tuesday afternoon, the roads were covered. That's why the Lafayette Street Department had been out in full force, trying to prevent these snow-related crashes from happening.

"The day crew pretty has all the main streets done. They'll have to touch them up a little bit because the snow keeps flying. Then they'll head into the secondaries and the neighborhoods," said Dan Crowell, Lafayette Street Commissioner.

Police and the street department said conditions will be bad for the morning commuters. That's why drivers need to plan ahead.

"Allow yourself plenty of time, leave plenty early and drive slow," Long said.

Crowell said the roads should be clear by 3 p.m. Wednesday.
