Snow storms in March not uncommon

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - With the first day of spring just a few weeks away preparations are underway for what may be the biggest snow storm of the season.
    
"When March rolls around everybody's ready for spring, but truth be told around the Midwest some of our biggest snow falls actually occur in March," News 18 Meteorologist Jessie Hawila said. "This one that we're about to have looks to be the most significant one we've had all year."

Many people said they didn't know we're expecting snow, but living in Indiana they said they weren't not surprised to hear the news.

"It's Indiana though so the weather's pretty crazy," resident Matt Carver said.

"One day it can be totally warm, the next day be cold, then raining, sunny and shiny, and then it will be snowing," resident Patricia Laughter said.

"With Indiana weather you just stick around and it will change," resident Kevin Leap said.

The weather can change in the blink of an eye. So far this year, Hawila said we're well under the average amount of snowfall.

"We're about 8 inches below normal here in Lafayette for how much snow we should see, so if you take the inches that we should see and look at what we have seen, we've only received about half the amount of snow we should have by the end of February," Hawila said.

But have no fear, spring-like weather is right around the corner. Then again, it is Indiana.
