LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A winter storm made roads slick for Friday morning commuters in Greater Lafayette. The storm dropped a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. That mix left a slushy mess.

Local law enforcement officials said they did not receive the amount of accident reports they were expecting, hoping that drivers got the message to be extra cautious. Still, Sgt. Andy Cree with the Tippecanoe Co. Sheriff's Office said drivers should not underestimate this storm.

Even though the main thoroughfares may appear not too hazardous, News 18 Meteorologist Jessie Hawila warns you not to be fooled. The temperature will be rising as the sun comes up, but through the morning rush hour it's a good bet it will be below the freezing mark. That will allow for the melting snow to freeze and ice to remain on the roadways.

"Patience," said Sgt. Cree. "Salt doesn't mean the road is perfect."

Sgt. Cree said deputies had received several calls about State Road 25 but cautioned that no road seemed worse than others.
