WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Construction crews are putting up walls and putting up steel along Northwestern Avenue in West Lafayette.
"The Faith project is moving down the road well," West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis said. "There were some preliminary drainage issues that they needed to resolve."
But Mayor Dennis said other than those preliminary road blocks, crews were able to get the green light on construction earlier than expected thanks to Mother Nature.
"We were able to get a lot of the engineering and site work done early because of the dry summer we had," Mayor Dennis said. "Now they're into doing the buildup and again its on schedule, but as you know things change and anything could happen."
When complete, the project will offer a fitness center, free counseling and a cafe, along with 16 jobs.
"The site will also have a meeting area, a residential component and also a retail component. From what we've seen so far, it looks like its going very smoothly," Mayor Dennis said.
Meanwhile, construction at the lot that used to house Kmart on Sagamore Parkway is going smoothly and will soon be home to several new businesses, including a bank and a health care facility.
"Overall they've done an amazing job making sure the right businesses are going there," Mayor Dennis said. "We've got a medical facility going there which is something this community has been crying for for many years and it truly dresses up a site that was one point a very blighted area in our community."
Construction on the rest of the Wabash Commons and the Faith West project won't be complete until 2013.
