Semi truck hits and kills man

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - A man was hit and killed by a semi truck after he got out of a car to switch drivers.

Troopers with Indiana State Police Lafayette said the accident occurred just after 7:45 Saturday morning, on I-74 east near the 31-mile marker in Montgomery County.

According to troopers, a blue 2006 Chevrolet Impala, driven by 21-year-old Christopher Jensen of Omaha, was parked in the emergency lane to change drivers.

Troopers said 24-year-old Hugh Guild Jr . from Indianapolis had just exited the back left passenger door to trade places with Jensen.

According to troopers, a semi pulling a box trailer, driven by 38-year-old Max Jackson of Beech Grove, Ind., was eastbound when the lens of his glasses fell to the floor.

When he reached down to pick up the lens, the semi drifted off the right side of the roadway and struck the Impala, killing Guild.

Jensen was not in the vehicle at the time and was not injured.

The front seat passenger, 21-year-old Sheldon Nez  from Tuba City, Ariz., was transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis with non-life threatening head injuries.

27-year-old Kentrell Vertner from Omaha was sitting in the right rear passenger seat, and was not injured.

Troopers said no part of the load on the semi trailer was lost, and the investigation is ongoing.
