Salvation Army Family Store moving into abandoned building

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The the old Circuit City building on Sagamore Parkway in Lafayette currently sits empty. But by November, it will be renovated into a Salvation Army Family Store.

The thrift store will provide Lafayette residents with a way to shop for or even get rid of used items.

"Clothing, books, tools. you name it. If you've got it and you're not using it and it's in good condition, we want to be able to use that," said Major Jim Irvine.

Irvine said the proceeds from Salvation Army stores across the state go to the organization's Adult Rehabilitation Center in Indianapolis. He said the center helps people struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. He said by shopping at the store, people are helping local residents.

"I've known personally of individuals from Lafayette, West Lafayette, and other parts of Tippecanoe County that have been a part of that program, that have benefited from that," said Irvine.

The store will also be helping people by providing new jobs.

Envoy Steve McNary out of Indianapolis said the store will bring about 29 jobs to the Lafayette area. He said the Salvation Army will start accepting applications in about a month at the Salvation Army on Union Street.

"We'll have a couple days there, we'll come up and we'll be there all day, interviewing and getting folks started in this process of getting started with the Salvation Army," said McNary.

McNary said the location of the store will be great for shoppers and donators because of how close it is to the mall and other stores.

McNary said donations trucks will be parked at the former Circuit City building starting next Wednesday. He said people will be able to claim what they donate on their taxes. After Wednesday, these are the hours for the donation trucks:

•  Monday-Friday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
•  Saturday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
•  Sunday: 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
