Salvation Army accepting toys

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The Salvation Army has begun its Toys for Tots toy drive.

Major Jim Irvine says the donations are slowly starting to roll in.

He said people have been donating everything from basketballs to coats and socks.

Irvine wants to remind those who plan on giving that expensive gifts are nice, but no one needs to go overboard.

"We're not looking for high-end gifts. As a matter of fact, we are asking people to shy away from from the high-end gifts. The reason for that is we have to remember that we are helping a number of people in the community and we don't want people to feel slighted. We don't want a brother, for instance, to receive a bicycle and his sister to receive only a doll. So, we are trying to level the playing field," said Irvine.

Irvine said people should not spend any more than $50 per child.  The Salvation Army is still looking for bell ringers.  If you would like to apply, you can click here .
