Rokita visits Frankfort Mayoral candidates

FRANKFORT, Ind. (WLFI) - 23-year-old political newcomer Chris Mcbarnes is running for Mayor of Frankfort.

Tuesday, U.S. Congressman Todd Rokita was in Frankfort showing his support for McBarnes and urging voters to take a chance on a young challenger. McBarnes sealed the Mayoral seat Tuesday night with 75% of the vote.

“He's an excellent representative for the new Republican party for having young blood involved,” said Todd Rokita, U.S. Representative, District 4 (R).

But mayoral candidate Chris McBarnes said his AGE comes with a price tag!

“The most challenging part is overcoming the age ... overcoming the credibility issues. I've had to work very hard going door to door ... creating campaign literature,” said Chris McBarnes, Frankfort Mayoral candidate (R).

But despite the challenges, McBarnes said he's not letting his age get in the way of his vision for Frankfort.

“I want to engage our youth. I have a plan in place right now. It’s a sustainable plan in place for Frankfort. It’s called the McBarnes 100-day plan. It’s wrapped around neighborhood revitalization, economic development, communication and citizen voice. I believe these are the cornerstones of any community,” said McBarnes.

Democratic opponent, Richard Greeno, said even though McBarnes has Representative Todd Rokita's support, and may have a few more signs on front lawns, he isn't worried about his young opponent beating him in this year's race.

“I admire him for doing this, but I think you need a little bit more experience other than just book smarts,” said Richard Greeno, Frankfort Mayoral candidate (D).

But at the end of the day, McBarnes said that age is only a number.

“You can't put wisdom with age. You can't put intellect with age. We're asking people to look at the good moral character. We're asking people to look at the intellect with individuals and the actual plans they have in place for Frankfort,” said McBarnes.

“Respect isn't something thats given, it’s earned. You might have to do the job even better than someone that is twice your age , but that’s ok because the people are the ones that are the benefit of that,” said Rokita.  

Earlier this year, current Frankfort Mayor Chris Pippenger announced he wouldn't seek re-election, so he could spend more time with his family.
