Road crews working around the clock

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - A blanket of snow covered much of central Indiana including the Greater Lafayette area.

"We've got plenty of salt out there on the street already so rush hour shouldn't be a problem for anybody that is still in town who's not on vacation," West Lafayette Street Commissioner Dave Downy said.

"We're ready," Lafayette Street Commissioner Dan Crowell said. "We've got all the plows out and loaded with salt and ready to go."

Road crews worked around the clock Wednesday making sure roads were ready for this year's first heavy snowfall.

"I have nine trucks," Downy explained. "I will only use three of them for a while until I see how bad it gets before I deploy all nine of them."

Southbound traffic on Interstate 65 just north of State Road 43 came to a complete stop Wednesday morning after emergency crews responded to several accidents. Poor visibility on the roadways remained throughout the day making it a headache for drivers.

But law enforcement officials said plan ahead in order to avoid those headaches.

"Make sure you get up early, leave early and take your time wherever you're going today," Lieutenant John Ricks with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office said. "Once the snow hits it's slick out there and you just need to take your time."

Emergency responders remind drivers if you don't have to leave your house you're best bet is to stay at home during blizzard conditions like Wednesday's.
