Road crews get ready for storm

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - As a massive snow storm heads towards Indiana, road crews in West Lafayette were out spraying liquid salt on the road. Street Commissioner Dave Downey said once the liquid evaporates, the salt remains. This helps prevent ice from forming. Downey said he is concerned about the possibility of freezing rain before the snow. But he said his crews are prepared. He does urge everyone to get a jump-start on the snow by getting essentials while it's still safe to drive.

"The main thoroughfares should be passable. Everything will be slick and hazardous there is no way to stop that so slow down, get your milk and bread today while the sun is out. And, we should be fine," he said.

AAA also has a few driving tips this keep in mind as the snow moves in:

• Remember to get as much snow as possible off your car so that it doesn't blow onto your windshield or other cars.
• The same goes for mirrors and lights.
• Always keep your low-beam headlights on.
• When the roads are icy, slow down and give yourself some extra room.
• Remember to keep travel limited as the roads get rough.

The Indiana Department of Transportation said if the electricity does goes out during this storm and stop lights aren't functioning, the intersection becomes a four-way stop. Drivers can go through with caution and of course, yield to the right-of-way to traffic.
