Riverfest taking place for more than a decade

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - People gathered at Tapawingo Park in West Lafayette on Saturday to race both on water and on land.

The Wabash Riverfest summer festival was taking place Saturday. The festival has been taking place for more than a decade. Riverfest builds on the theme of conservation and appreciation of the Wabash River.

Saturday, Riverfest goers were able to participate in a canoe race and a 5K, among other things. The festival also provided free pony rides, live music, and numerous educational opportunities.

General Chair of Riverfest Gene Hatke said although the goal is to educate people about the Wabash, he said they also hope to show people how great of an asset it is for the community.

"The real purpose is to just get people down here," said Hatke. "Show them how accessible the river is, how much fun it can be, and what a great resource it is for the community."

Riverfest is a free event that takes place every summer. The festival ran from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
