LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Tippecanoe County's Relay for Life event hopes to find a cure for both cancer and hunger this year.

The American Cancer Society kicked off the annual fundraiser at Jeff High School in Lafayette. The walk will partner with another nonprofit this year.

The event will raise money for cancer research and will also raise donations for Food Finders Food Bank. Relay for Life Event Chair Wendy Fording said cans of food will anchor the luminarias this year instead of sand. Then the cans will be donated to Food Finders.

"We are trying to reduce the sand we put in the bags. It makes less of a mess that way," said Fording.

The event is expect to bring in about 2,000 cans for the food bank.

The Relay for Life will be June 24 and 25, 2010 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at Lafayette Jeff High School.
