40-vehicle crash closes Interstate 70

HENDRICKS COUNTY (WISH) - About 40 vehicles crashed Thursday afternoon on Interstate 70 in Hendricks County, sending seven people to local hospitals.

The crash included 20 semitrailers and another 15-20 other types of vehicles. The incident happened before 3 p.m. on I-70 near Cotton Road.

As of 2:57 p.m., all eastbound lanes will be closed 8 hours due to the crash, according to INDOT. As of 3:15 p.m. westbound lanes will be closed for 6 hours, INDOT said.

I-70 east traffic is being diverted onto Ind. 39. Westbound traffic is being diverted onto Ind. 267.

Three patients were transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital, two patients were sent to IU Health West Hospital and two patients were taken to Hendricks Regional Hospital. Although some patients were considered seriously injured, all patients were expected to survive.

The crash happened the same day Detroit saw a mile long stretch of crashes that left three people dead and 20 people injured.
