Record numbers already set at polls

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - With less than a month until the 2012 election, record numbers have already been set at the polls.

Tuesday marked the first day of early voting and Tippecanoe County election officials said more people hit the polls Tuesday than they ever have during the first day of early voting.

As of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, 184 people in Tippecanoe County had cast their votes. That's 44 more people than in 2008 when 140 people voted early.

Election officials said they believe more people are invested in this year's election and are choosing to cast their votes early.

Tuesday was also the last day to register to vote.

"We have received over 200 registrations just today through people coming in our office or mailing them in," Tippecanoe County Board of Elections Co-Director Jared Bond said.

Voters should bring along a government-issued photo I.D., such as an Indiana driver' s license or I.D. card, a U.S. passport or military I.D.

Early voting ends Nov. 5 and is currently taking place only at the Board of Elections office this week from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Starting next week, several other early voting sites will open.
