Reading program turns 10 years old

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - A program promoting reading among young children is celebrating its tenth year.

"Book Cycle" began in 2002 with just a $500 anonymous grant.

It grew to provide children with access to books at eight different Head Start and Tippecanoe County Child Care Centers.

The program hosts a weekly book exchange allowing them to take two books home a week.

“We're just so excited that this program is growing strong and we hope it will continue to go strong,” Book Cycle Coordinator Colleen Reader said.

And coordinators aren’t the only ones who love Book Cycle.

“I volunteered the first time, I read to the kids and I saw the joy and the excitement of having their books and returning them. We would knock on the door and they would say 'Book Cycle!' and we would get so excited because they would get so excited,” Book Cycle Volunteer Pam Glinke said.

Book Cycle is funded from grants and donations.

If you would like to help support Book Cycle, you can make checks payable to Bauer Family Resources. Please print “Book Cycle” on your check. Mail to Book Cycle, care of Mary Springer, at 4686 State Road 28 East, Lafayette, IN, 47909.

If you’d like to become a volunteer, contact Colleen Reader via email or by calling (765) 404-5700.
