Rain and melting snow could cause flooding in areas

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Melting snow and rain could cause flooding this weekend. Emergency Management Agency (EMA) directors said with the rain moving in on Sunday, they'll keeping a close eye on the possibility.

"If we do see something coming down the road, we watch the weather, of course, and if we have the potential for a flooding, we'll have a meeting ahead of time, make sure everybody's on board, know what our plan will be and we'll implement the plan as need-be."

Clinton County EMA director Darrell Sanders said city officials have plans in place in case they see flooding in low-lying areas.

The city recently added retention ponds in problem areas.

Sanders said if you're on the road, be cautious of water in the roadway.

"If you see a sign that says high water, just stop right there and turn around and go back," Sanders said. "A lot of people think their vehicle with go through it. They won't. "

Tippecanoe County EMA director Smokey Anderson agrees.

"If water is covering the road near moving water like a creek, river or tributary, absolutely avoid that and turn around," Anderson said.

Anderson said while he doesn't expect severe flooding this weekend, flooding is no joke.

"Flooding causes lots of damage and lots of injuries and deaths every year across the United States, so it is something we need to be concerned about," Anderson said. "Typically around here it is in low-lying areas. Typically those areas are the same flood after flood."

Meteorologists expect the heaviest rain to hit Sunday evening.
