WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A group of Purdue band members built a version of the world's largest drum to fly into Lake Michigan. Unfortunately, the heavy rain the area received on Friday led to the event being canceled.
According to team pilot Chris Yamamoto, the team had two options. Redbull, who was hosting the competition, could either pay them $1,000 for their drum or they could be automatically entered into the competition for next year.
Yamamoto said they rejected the money.
"All of the hard work we put in to it to not see it fly, you know, this project was never about money," said Yamamoto. "This project was to have the experience of a lifetime and see all of our engineering skills get put together in an interdisciplinary fashion."
Yamamoto said they will store the craft in Indianapolis and in the meantime, work on improving the craft for next year.
