WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Purdue University women athletes had the chance to interact with their younger fans Sunday.
The National Girls and Women in Sports Day was celebrated all across the country.
Athletes from every sport at Purdue were on hand to give kids the chance to learn more about their sports.
Purdue Assistant Director of Promotions and Advertising, Erin Kraebber, said Sunday's event was primarily for four to 14 year olds, but was open to anyone.
"It's enjoyable for them, I think, just to get a chance to interact with kids a little bit more one on one at their sporting events. Even though we do autographs and little clinics, this is a little bit more interactive and fun for them. Even though it's only two and a half hours, it's a lot of fun for them. They're great about helping out and spending some time here with us," said Kraebber.
Purdue softball player Katie Hackey said it's really important to give back to the community.
"Each year we do it and it's just fun to watch. Little kids, they'll come up and not hit the ball in their first couple tries and then by the fifth time, they're hitting the ball and each time they just smile and it's just a lot of fun," said Hackey.
"We have our cheerleaders here doing tattoos and signing autographs and taking pictures with Purdue Pete. We have an arts and crafts area where they can make posters. We have a snack area and just some different things set up for the kids to do," said Kraebber.
