Possible typhoid fever symptoms appear for one person at Purdue Wednesday

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - One person came to the Purdue Student Health Center (PUSH) Wednesday who had possibly relevant typhoid fever symptoms. This follows the University’s announcement Tuesday that a Marriott Hall food handler had contracted the illness.

According to Purdue spokeswoman Jeanne Norberg, the symptoms were relatively mild in Wednesday’s case, but to be certain, the doctor offered to conduct lab tests because that individual had eaten at Marriott Hall on the three days in question, Jan. 23-25.

Results generally take about 3-5 days once a stool specimen is obtained.

The Indiana State Department of Health reported that emergency rooms in Tippecanoe County have experienced no increase in visits with gastric complaints.

Meanwhile, according to Dr. Sarah Seger at PUSH, within the first two hours of operation Wednesday a dozen people called the center and came in to ask questions about typhoid fever.
