DELPHI, Ind. (WLFI) - When Sandy Arnold-Lucas of Delphi heard her text alert go off Friday night she read the text. But what she read alarmed her.
"I thought it was kind of odd because I don't have a [credit] card ending in the four numbers that it is saying," Arnold-Lucas said. "I texted back, and never got a response."
The text from 765-637-8145 told Arnold-Lucas her card starting with 4328 was being deactivated. It told her to call 765-442-2042.
When her text didn't get a response. She called the sender's number.
"I tried to call the number it came from," Arnold Lucas said. "It said it had been disconnected. I made that call five to ten minutes after I got [the text]."
These texts have been reported in multiple area counties. Lafayette police said Arnold-Lucas was lucky. They recommend not calling any numbers on the suspicious texts.
"If it is a number you're not familiar with I wouldn't call it back," Lafayette Police Sergeant Jay Rosen said. "Also, if there are any questions I would call the bank where the card originated."
Arnold-Lucas reported the text to the Carroll County Sheriff's Office. When she was there she ran into people who said they also got the text. Police said other text scams will say their an Alliance Bank Alert or a Credit Union Center Alert.
Police said scammers want you to call them and give them your bank account numbers. They said anyone can become a victim.
"The elderly [could be victims]," Rosen said. "Maybe a person who is a first time credit card holder, they may just not know. I think anyone could be a victim."
"Everyone just needs to be aware," Arnold-Lucas said. "Don't give them any kind of response, and go ahead and make a report on it."
Arnold-Lucas said her bank is the Industrial Federal Credit Union in Delphi. She plans to call employees this week.
